Carbon offsetting - change the ending

Offset your unavoidable carbon emissions with Eagles Relief and Development. We mobilise communities in Malawi to plant trees, make fuel efficient stoves and replenish the carbon in the soil through conservation faming. With us your money goes further as it catalyses communities to keep acting on climate issues using their own resources.

Reduce where you can

As well as offsetting we encourage people to look at how they can reduce their carbon footprint. Car exhausts, aircraft emissions, domestic energy, food production and waste all contribute to climate change. This impacts the lives of people all around the world, but the most vulnerable pay the highest price.

We all need to make big changes to our lifestyle.

  • Change how you travel – fly less, drive less, cycle more, take the train.
  • Switch to a green electricity provider to support investment in renewable energy.
  • Wherever possible, insulate your homes to reduce wasted energy
  • Eat less meat and dairy
  • Buy less, buy things to last, and things made from recycled materials. Mend anything you can – don’t just throw things away!

By living more lightly and choosing what is best for our planet, we encourage those around us to do the same things – and the community of those who care grows. You can make a difference.

Our climate work in Malawi

As the fourth poorest country in the world, Malawi is already one of the hardest hit by climate change. 85% of people in Malawi are subsistence farmers, eating only what they can grow. The unpredictable weather and the increasing frequency of natural disasters caused by climate change threaten their livelihoods and their lives.

Through your carbon offset donation, communities will be helped to identify and tackle their own greatest environmental challenges by:

  • Planting trees – In 2018, Eagles’ communities planted 122,064 trees. This removes carbon dioxide (CO²) from the atmosphere during photosynthesis, locking up the carbon in the wood and returning oxygen into the air.
  • Using fuel efficient stoves - can cut fuel use by 50%, reducing deforestation and carbon emissions from cooking. In 2018, Eagles trained 1,981 people to make and use energy saving stoves.
  • Conservation agriculture - including using organic fertiliser, traps temperature-raising carbon in the soil, keeping it from contributing to the greenhouse effect.

With Eagles, your money goes further! Recent research suggests that Eagles' focus on breaking dependency by mobilising communities to identify their own problems and take action using their own resources can achieve the same impact as more traditional projects at less than 5% of the cost!
